Jon Stewart's succesor makes fun of a Republican candidate (who isn't Donald Trump) VOS

Jon Stewart's successor, Tevor Noah, seems to be a good choice with a sense of humor similar to Jon's. Here he is making fun of a Republican candidate, Ben Carson, whose ideas are almost as strange as Donald Trump. Carson is a brain surgeon, which makes it surprising that he has such weird ideas. With SUBTITLES

Funny parody of anti-depressant and Viagra TV ads

http://www.upworthy.com/a-hilarious-fake-commercial-makes-a-strong-case-that-you-should-go-outside-more?c=upw1&u=e631f5890e697e2b488486e3df8b0abc0b08de15

This is a short parody of the kind of TV commercials made for antidepressants and viagra. These are on this blog in a post f this past spring. These kinds of TV commercial spot  are the object  of some criticism and are not allowed in the EU ( unfortunately, I think)

UPDATE:

1. My post with the real prescription drug TV commercials is from March 22 2015.

2. This kind of advertising has only been allowed in the US since 1997. The United Stated and New Zealand are the only 2 countries in the world where direct advertising of prescription drugs to the public on TVis legal. In other countries they are only permitted in specialized publications and journals for doctors. CLICK HERE

A short video about how we ourselves and our successes

This short video and accompanying video may be a little "cheesy" (cursi) but it is also true that many people under-estimate themselves because they have an inferiority complex  and if other people admire them or think that they are successful, they think their success is really due to luck and so they feel like "imposters."  I remember there was an article about this "imposter syndrome" in the advanced Face 2 Face, though I don't know if it's in the latest edition. But the video clip is under 3 minutes, easy to understand and there is even a transcript right after the video which you can click onto.

POLITICAL AD

As those of you who were my students at the CSIM last year know, I retired at the end of January of this year. But I feel bad about just letting my blog die or not posting any material for the 437 people who I'm pleased to see have still been visiting my blog in the past month - despite only sporadic new material and summer vacation!

I'd like to start reorganizing the blog so that all posts are labeled and repetitions deleted. But for now I at least want to post short easy video clips with some written words or subtitles.
The following is a political ad by a progressive Democratic politician who's running for senator. It's a bit populist but because of that, the vocabulary is very predictable! What things he says are similar to Spanish politicians? What's different?
A little vocabulary help:
funds= fondos
lawsuit = pleito judicial
bill= decreto ley

A Wonderful Scene with subtitles

AND A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GREAT ROBIN WILLIAMS, whose first anniversary of his death is coming up in a few weeks.

QUESTIONS AND LISTENING EXERCISE

View the scene: CLICK HERE

Now answer the questions and do the listening exercise.

1. What are the key words of the title of the poem that Keating asks one boy to read?  Why does he say that this poem is appropriate for the boys?

2.      What is the Latin term for the theme of this poem?  What is its meaning in English?  Do you remember any of the words of the poem?

3.  Who are the boys in the photograph and when did they attend Hilton, the exclusive private boarding school of the film?  According to Keating, in what ways are these boys like his present students?

4.      While looking at the pictures of the old alumni, Keating comments that these boys are now “fertilizing daffodils.”  What do you think a “daffodil” is?  What is the meaning of this phrase?  Is there a similar expression in Spanish?

5.      What reaction would you have had to Keating’s class?   Would a teacher like Keating have had problems in the high school you attended?  Why or why not?

6.       What different reactions did the boys have to the class?

7.      What are some of the “weird” things that Keating did during the class?  What dramatic devices or tricks did he use to get the boys’ attention?

8.     Do you think that a good teacher is always a bit of an actor?  What adjectives would you use to describe Keating’s teaching style?  Are these the qualities you value most in a teacher or are there others you value as much or more?

DEAD POETS’ SOCIETY --- Sentences. Look up any words you don’t know in these sentences. Then number them in the order you hear them.

“If you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you.  Go on.  Lean in...”

“Cause we are food for worms, lad.”

“Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.”

“The world was their oyster:  they believe they are destined for great things, just like many of you.”

Easy to understand video clip in English

The subject isn't a very happy one, but it's plausible, unfortunately, and the dialog is simple and colloquial with short sentences and exchanges. CLICK HERE

US farmer gives his daughter away

In the US, it is the custom during the wedding ceremony for the father of the bride to give a little speech to the groom ( the fiancé on the day of the wedding: the male equivalent of "Bride") giving him his daughter.

This is a little "corny" maybe too religious for some in the talk about God (typically American) but it is funny and sweet, the language is simple and very colloquial ...... AND THERE ARE SUBTITLES!!

Short videos about Racism and incarceration in the USA

Those of you who follow international current events must know that there have been many scandals in the news about white policemen shooting and killing unarmed black men in the US, pointing to the fact that unfortunately racism is still alive there and other news articles and clips about how full the prisons are there and how sentences are longer for black offenders.

Here are a few VERY SHORT videos on this topic IN SIMPLE ENGLISH! They either have written subtitles or you can see them clicking onto cc on bottom right.

1."Racism is Real" : CLICK HERE

2. About incarceration (ODDS  and CHANCES here mean "probability") CLICK HERE and
CLICK HERE ("pipeline" = supply (fuente de alimentación)

3. Finally, incarceration of women. That this topic is very current is evident by the US series "Orange is the New Black" and "Macarena" and "Reclusas" here. Short ad in Spanish hat you can skip after 3 seconds.CLICK HERE

My mom : health, illness and death in Spain and the US: VERY UPDATED!!

Hi students, ex-students and followers

I have neither posted anything nor reorganized my blog as promised because shortly after my retirement, my 97 year old mother became very ill with incurable pneumonia. I went to the Senior Citizens' Residence where she was in Miami. She passed away on March 10. This was the same date my father died on 37 years before. Coincidence or an indication of my mother's  strong will??

Here is the photo and write-up my sister and I wrote for the non-denominational service ( no particular religion) that was held for her in the Residence where she had many friends.

She had paliative care, called "hospice care", right in her room, with oxygen, nurses night and day and the medication necessary to alleviate suffering as much as possible- which at her age was the best option.

I don't know if this type of care exists as easily here or not.

*******************************************************

Reflecting on health, illness and death here and there, I see one thing I like better in each society.

On the one hand, each trip to the States, I'm increasingly amazed by the amount of commercial spots on US TV for medications ( with people looking falsely happy after taking them!), supplements, and diet and exercise products. The US has become a nation of hypocondriacs! It's almost as though they think that if they take enough care of themselves, they might never die - as though death were an option they can avoid with money and hard work instead of a fact of life! Steve Jobs was an exception!

This health obsession is inescapable on US TV in several ways:
1- TV commercials for prescription drugs, something not allowed in the EU. ( See examples 2 posts up)

Prozac commercial Click right below

:

Celebrex commercial: Click top of picture

2- Invention of new "diseases" like "restless leg syndrome" ,"non-24" or a slight calcium loss after menopause to sell new or already existing medications. PMS is a household word, and doctors are prescribing Prozac for it!

3.Similar obsession with all kinds of supplements. Perhaps unlike Spain, it's not that most Americans pop conventional pills but not natural supplements: they take everyting they can get their hands on and everything is advertised continually on TV.

4. This includes cosmetic surgery and less invasive procedures such as Botox. Here you have "Corporación Dermo-estética" There you have hundreds!

5.- The so-called "ambulance chasers". These are very commercial lawyers who constantly advertise about how people with a given disease are probably able to SUE  a producer of some product or the constructor of their house.

All this is satrized one post above or   HERE

6. Another difference is attitude towards infectuous diseases. There is no recognition that we have germs inside us as part of our "eco-system" and that they can "get the upper hand" if we don't protect ourselves, become over-tired, etc., the virus or bacteria is always "the enemy outside us to be fought or avoided. People have become very paranoid about flying not only because of terrorism but because of germs! If you cough or say you have a little cold, people run from you as if you'd said you have the plague! I've speculated that this might be because historically Americans have always seen themselves as the "good guys" of society, with the enemy outside them. Or because of a certain historical attitude of FEAR, which Michael Moore satirizes in the cartoon section of Bowling for Columbine, which I've shown in some classes.  Click here

On the other hand, I like the funeral services there: they are more casual and less solemn and friends and family members speak spontaneously, sharing even humorous memories about the person.
I find the Catholic funeral mass too impersonal. For funeral scene from "Four Weddings and A Funeral" with subtitles, CLICK HERE

I also like the "neighorborly attitude". Friends and neighbors usually give food to the grieving family members so that they don't have to worry about cooking at this time and some of the food and drink they bring is often used for a little party right after the service. You've probably seen this in American movies. For final scene from Philadephia Click here

Conversation B2 and Conversation C1: DON'T BRING MACS for Presentations

An important note for those who are doing presentations tomorrow or Monday.

IF YOU ARE DOING YOUR PRESENTATION WITH SLIDES OR ANOTHER TOOL YOU NEED THE PROJECTOR FOR AND ARE PLANNING TO BRING A LAPTOP, THE PROJECTORS AT THE CSIM CAN'T CONNECT TO MACS ( APPLE) SO BRING ANOTHER TYPE.!!

I also want to remind you that for a better grade, you need to bring some vocabulary : at least 4 or 5 word webs with new vocabulary you learned connected with different themes - education, Halloween or "spooky" stories, money and finance, protest songs, social networks, anagrams, etc.

Job Interviews Con C1 Wed. and Con B2 Tuesday

I am going to publish 2 short and useful documents for job interviews:

CLICK HERE  for list of personal skills

and     CLICK HERE for Tricky Questions for Job Interviews.

The current trend is to combine the 2 lists for more specific questions according to what you say your skills  and the needs of the post you are applying for are. For example, if you say, you are good at negotiating, the interviewer will ask you about the last time you had to negotiate, the details the problems you encountered and how you solved them. If the post you are applying for involves people or financail skills, they will ask how you handled a difficult person or client or how you solved a budgetary problem and /or convinced your boss to adopt it, etc. So try to think so ways you can combine the 2 lists for more difficult, detailed and specific questions!!

In addition, I have just found an incredibly detailed source online for those of you who would like to go into more detail.

The relevant pages are pp. 105 through 162, so scroll back. (The first pages to appear are the end!)

THIS IS PROBABLY THE LAST POST FOR FOR GROUP UTIL THE GRADES AT THE END OF THE MONTH!!

Conversation C1 for Monday- updated with Columbine interviews VOS

Welcome back

I hope you all had a great vacation and have come to good decisions regarding the Presentations.

1. I THINK I have posted all the songs in the post December 15 ( 2014), CLICK HERE but I want to be sure I have clear who did what song, so I'd like to go over that.

2. On January 3 CLICK HERE, I posted a curious article and wrote that I plan to do Bowling for Columbine.  it went well in the Conversation B2 and we never did it. AND we can connect it with recent events - a sort of "terrorist attack"  by alienated youth -as well as with the article

3. I've decided to include 2 other short scenes that we did in the other class - a short interview with the authors of South Park. CLICK HERE BUT START WATCHING AT MINUTE 3
And another interview with Marilyn Manson CLICK HERE
AND HERE FOR VOCABULARY AND QUESTIONS CLICK HERE

These 2 interviews together are only a little over 6 minutes. PLEASE WATCH WITHOUT SUBTITLES - you are C1 and the vocabulary will help!! I have the video with subtitles in Spanish but would prefer not to use it!!

4. I just remembered that Gloria and Raul have practiced a love song. I hope we have time, but if we don't, it can wait for Wednesday

5. Finally, I've decided to finish the course on Jan. 28th. We missed one class because I was ill, and we have lost so uch time because of bad technology that I honestly feel I owe you a second class!

Conversation B2 and C1: Some "soft" science

1. A video clip on the subject of medical marijuana-- FROM A RESEARCHER AT THE UCM!!  An opportunity to listen to a researcher who is working right here, getting world-wide recognition and speaking excellent English!  Good for those who want more science listenings and also for Con B2 because it's related to the roleplay we did!.There is also a text to read below.
http://www.trueactivist.com/molecular-biologist-explains-how-thc-kills-cancer-cells/

2. Now a few video clips about ecology, climate change, etc.

a.  short video by a Hopi Indian chief about the philosophy of his people and why the USA (led not by the Hopis but by the "Americans from Europe" probably will not survive. His voice is very slow, clear and relaxing.  2 interesting statistics: before the white man arrived, there were 60 million Hopi Indians in North America but now there are 800,000 or .2% of the population.

b. All the useful vocabulary about climate change, pollution and protests. Very correct subtitles in English clicking onto rectangle that looks like en envelope. ( only mistakes smelting = melting       (derritiendo) Nunavit = none of it and L'Agence ¨delegates (??!)

And DiCaprio speaks very clearly and it doesn't hurt that he's very nice to look at!

In case the video clips were a litle difficult, some simple jokes, puns ( juegos de palabra) and tongue twisters.

Tongue twisters
