B 1.3 Friday class

Hope you are having a good holiday, resting, with your family, enjoying the spirit, feeling the religious or the general spirit (or not) eating and drinking -- in other words, whatever is most important for you!

Below is the progress test for Unit 1 for you to print and give to me printed and completed ( since I can't correct online) .Also, to begin Unit 2, please do p. 16 #1 and p. 17 3 to 7 ( whole page except for #8) . Pablo V. and others will have a lot to say on this topic I think!

Con B1: Both groups

Hope you're having a good vacation. I'm publishing Marisa's very good summary of the next to the last class ( which I didn't see until nowand was the same for both groups) and Betsa's wonderful recipe for Tiramisú.

Hello! I’m going to tell you what we did on Wednesday. Some partners read love histories of famous people. We had to guess who was this famous person. After this we made a survey about food and restaurants. Then we talked about food and learnt new words. It’s helpful if we go to a restaurant in England for example. You have to know what you’re going to eat.
And Betsa's recipe:

1 comentario:

  1. Hi Kate and everyone!!

Here comes my recipe: Tiramisú for 4

Ingredients: 2 eggs, a packAGE of mascarpone cheese, finger biscuits (bizcochos), sugar, vanilla eXtract, coffe and some liquor (rum, coñac or wiskey as you prefer), NesQuik or other powdered cocoa.

You will need: 3 bowls, presentation plate, whisk, collander, spoons, and coffEe pot.

FIRST: take THe eggs and separate the yolks from the whites, put each one in a diFferent bowl. Beat very good the yolks VERY WELL with 2 spoons of sugar (one for each yolk)and mix with the mascarpone cheese, mix slowly until you have a homogenic HOMOGENOUS soft cream, add some vanilla eXtract. Taste it and add some sugar if you want.

Meanwhile: make the coffeE, put in on a bowl and mix with the liquor (normally half little COFFEE cup) and some sugar, taste it and add liquor or sugar if you prefer it stronger).

Leave cream and the coffEe out waiting for a while.

NOW: take the whites and beat very fast and strong until they stiffEN like a soft snow.
Finally mix the stiffenED whites with the cream, and Important!! very slowly trYing to retain the foamy texture. Better if you don't add sugar in this moment cause we can lose the texture (taste the sweet before, with the cream).

    FINALLY: make layers!
Take the biscuits and give them a bath in the bowl with the coffeE -only a moment, you can see if they smash  BREAK OR MELT  but the coffe must get in the bisquits- make a layer of bisquits on the plate.
Take the cream and make a layer with cream (be generous) and cover with the powdered cocoa. Do it again making anothRe layer of bisquits and another layer of cream and cover with powdered cocoa.

Put on the freeze and wait 8-12 hours and enjoy!! (you can eat before but you will see, the texture is not the same if you wait).

SECRETS of the recipe: mix slowly the cream, in the same direction, mix slowly with the stiffen whites. A layer can have 8-9 bisquits (depends on the size). The tub of mascarpone: better if it is 250gr.

Kisses and Merry Christmas for everyone!!!! enjoy!!!!

    Betza

    ------------------------------
ON THE FIRST DAY, WE´LL DO THINGS ABOUT FAMILIES AND MEMORIES FOR WHICH I HAVE THE MATERIAL.

PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH ME ABOUT YOUR PRESENTATIONS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'D LIKE TO DO A THEATRE SCENE SO THAT i CAN SEND IT TO YOU.

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

For Con B1: Vocabulary connected with love and relationships

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER:  VOCABULARY FOR LOVE STORIES:

LOVE STORY VOCABULARY:

This is Irene's really good summary. It's valid for both classes. After we talk about these questions, we'll do a related listening and then do a conversation game talking about the past.  C u 2morrow. :)

Dear classmates,
I write here about the class of wendsday from B.1 conversation.
Firstly we were talking about the vocabulary for rent a house or a flat, the differents names of the areas of Madrid, convenient, picturesque or lively area for example.
Also, Sergio and me practice a funny dialogue that it was made for Sergio and Marisa. The conversation was about the wish of Cristiano Ronaldo to rent a big house, it was very entertaining;)
For the other hand, we saw a Simpsons episode where Milhouse falls in love and the friendship between Bart and Milhouse was broken. We were talking about the story of the episode and answered the comprehension questions.
For the next monday class, we should write the answers of the discussion questions from the same Simpsons archive. I paste here;

1.Did you have sex education classes in primary school or high school? If so, what was the attitude of the class? Of the teacher? Do you think this kind of class has a valid place in the primary or high school curriculum? Why or why not? What age should it begin?

2.What do you think of Bart’s behavior? Have you ever done something for revenge and then felt guilty? Have you ever felt jealous because a good firend had a girlfriend or boyfriend and suddenly had less time for you? If so, how did you deal with this problem?

3.In English, we call first love between teenagers (or even younger children) “puppy love”. Do you think that puppy love can ever be serious? What’s the most typical age?

4. Do you think that “hypnosis” courses ever work for changing behavior? Tell about your own experience or that of someone you know.

For Con B2

Sorry about the cold last class.  People who didn't see the video about Henry Kravis, please do so on your own.  I want to listen to the roleplays and related conversation questions.

After I think the topic of advertising fits well, between the topic of greed and that of Xmas! Here is one of 2 things we'll be listening to!

Andrea Notes for Con B2 Tues.

Tuesday class:

First of all, we started the class watching a video about a phone conversation between a mother and "her daughter". The daughter was really disastrous and the mother was really needy and overprotective. At the end of the video, we realised that the mother and the daughter weren't that they think: phones were wrong.
Following this, we talked about overprotective mothers and needy people; and we did some exercises and questiones.

Later, we listened to the history of a woman who had a terrible illness. The doctors had told her that it didn't have cure, but a friend recommended her alternative medicine. She travelled to a lost small village, and a witch-doctor did strange rituals. Few days later, she came back to the hospital, and the doctors discovered that, incredibly, the illness was cured.
After that, we discussed about conventional medicine vs. alternative medicine: some of us defended the first one, some of us the second one; but finally we thought the best way was mixing both.
At last, we were talking about acupuncture, karma, holy places, positive and negative energies... A really interesting and mysterious class. And... I think that's all.

Kind regards,
Andreaaaa :)

B1.3 Friday class

We "performed" the dialogs prepared the previous class. We discussed the reading and our own opinions about exams or alternate ways of grading and tested students' knowledge.

We reviewed the grammar on p. 11, did some conversation parctice of the gerund or infinitive with cards and practice of the other categories of verbs.

We learned new vocabulary and did the 2 listenings and talked about cheating.

Homework:  Prepare to talk about the questions 1 to 4 in # 8 ( or in writing for extra credit) or about an experience connected with cheating on an exam.
ALSO DO THE LANGUAGE SUMMARY REVIEW ON A SEPARATE PAPER. ( I didn't mention this in class.)

Finally this is a short exercise to practice verb + object + inf. with TO  to download print and complete.

I still haven't found a way to give you a link to the Simpson episode with subtitles, but PLEASE CHECK TOMORROW.

Summaries of Con B1 made by Laura, Betsa and Noelia

  Thanks, Laura
Summary of Wednesday's class (November 21)

At the begining we talked about living in Madrid and if we like it or not. We discovered that Emilio, Kate and me are living in the same district: Hortaleza!
Kate told us the next wednesday at 5:00 PM it´s going to take place a party where we will could talk in english with another new people.
The rest of the class we told (talked) about adjectives that we thought that could describe people in Spain and in other different countries.

Greetings to my B1 Class!
Laura

    Hi Kate!!!

I'm here doing the exercise! the only way I found to post is here, in 'comments'.

First of all: a summary of yesterday.

We started the class talking about your theater goup who is called 'Madrid Palyers', we don't know about the play and have to find the information here, in the blog!
Also said you wanted the blog to be an interactive space to exchange information and exercises. Then talked about a lot of things like cinema and music.
Next we make the exercise about stereotypes with de photocopies and make a debate about different societys and their prejudices (UK, USA and Spain, reasons about stereotypes, how it works in Sapin...)
To finish we did a 'listening' exercise: listen the discourse and relate it to the photo.
    Here are the answers: 1 speech-photo D;
    2 Sp-Ph A; 3 Sp-Ph C; 4 Sp-Ph E; 5 Sp-Ph B.
    ResponderSuprimir
  2. Hi Kate and classmates!

I'll see you tomorrow but now I'm going to summarize our last English class or same points I keep in my mind.

The main subject we were working on was "The stereotypes" that are present in our society and that can be harmful or harmless for us. In my opinion, it was an interesting topic in order to know our opinion and to learn useful vocabulary about describing people and cultures.

On the other hand, I remember the beautiful song "Sitting on the dock of the bay" which expresses freedom and emotions.

    Greetings to everyone!;)

B1.3 Friday (last class)

Last class, we did an active review of the different tenses with mixer cards that contrasted tenses in a conversational context. We did p. 9 in bk. including preparing dialogs for next Fri.

Hmwk: Read p. 10, study #3 on p. 11 and Gerunds and Infinitives on this blog ( I think March).

As for "The Simpsons" I have realized there are no subtitles in English as there are on my DVD - which is a problem. I will try to look for a link with subtitles or solve this another way.  :)

For all 3 groups
I received this letter from a friend in the US. It sums up very well some of the things we discussed about Halloween.:

Happy Halloween from Gene Krackehl, LLC

Dear Kate,

Halloween has always been a special time for me. It gives some the opportunity to dress up and have parties, a time when Seances are done and Quija Boards are taken out of the closet.

Through the ages it has been a very sacred time when we honor our ancestors -- a time when the veils between the worlds are thinner so that we can see "the other side" of life, a time when our ancestors come to visit. This is also thought to be a time when your potential for "magical creation" is at its highest.

Whatever your beliefs and practices may be, I wish you a time of deep introspection, celebration and connection -- an opportunity for you to truly look at your life, celebrate what you've achieved, clearly see where it's headed and realize what its true purpose really is.

Happy Halloween!!!
With warmest regards,

Gene

For B1.3 Friday class

Finally, write a minimum of 100 words about your first week at the university.

Spain in Recent US News

The US media don’t usually publish many articles about specific European countries. However in recent years, newpapers like the NY Times and important blogs or online papers like the Huffington Post have published articles about Spain. Here are some examples:

Mitt Romney Spain Quip Adds to Foreign Troubles

VOCABULARY
Quip = short and often  sarcastic or clever remark or observation
Gaffe-prone  = with a tendency to put his foot in his mouth
Gaffe = metadura de pata verbal  ; prone = tendente a
Time warp =  unreal illusion about time. Someone who lives in a time warp thinks he is living at another historical moment. We also say “to be trapped in a time warp.”
To fact –check = to research data or statements before you used them as facts.

What does Romney use Spain as an example of?
How has he referred to Russia?  Why?
What negative things do they say about Romney’s public speaking?
How does one young American woman fear that her country is viewed in Europe?
What does one European young man answer about this?

Brownie Recipe and Play info.

Brownies Recipe
Ingredients
·         1 cup cake flour (harina para repostería)
·         ½   teaspoon baking powder (This is just a small part of an envelope of Royal baking powder.)
·         ½ teaspoon salt (or less)
·         1 cup sugar ( You can use brown if you are more health conscious but then use slightly more.)
·         ½ shortening (softened butter or margarine, preferably but could also be less strong olive oil.)
·         2 eggs
·         1 teaspoon vanilla extract
·         2½ squares of melted dark chocolate ( This means BIG squares( 2 ounces each, like “Fondant” or “Valor” , not little squares; also, the higher the percentage of pure chocolate, the better ( over 70%).
  OR
·         6 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (best bought in natural health food store!) and 2 extra tablespoons of melted butter.
·         1 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
Grease pan with slight bit of butter or oil , then flour (small amount of flour)
Mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder if used
In another bowl, mix the soft butter or margarine and the sugar together until it’s “fluffy.”
Then add the vanilla and the melted chocolate cooled a bit if this is what you’ve used.
Mix all these ingredients together until it’s VERY smooth.
Add the dry ingredients.
Add the nuts.
Preheat oven for 10 minutes to 180º to 200ª (depending on strength of oven)  ( continued on p.2)
Bake for 25 to 35 minutes. The baking time depends on size of baking pan. If you use a bigger pyrex pan (35 cms. Or more on inside) the baking time will be less. If you use a smaller but slightly higher baking pan ( 27 or28 cms.), it will be more. (I personally prefer the latter.) If your oven is not so strong, add 2 or 3 minutes.)

You will know the brownies are done if you stick a toothpick into them and it comes PRACTICALLY dry.  Then turn off oven, leave brownies for no more than 5 minutes and then remove from oven.
If you follow this recipe exactly, you will have perfect brownies. J
