Summary

First, we spent quite a bit of time talking about the Presentations and who would do the Presentations together.

In the Friday group, I think everyone can do the presentations on May 24th, as there are several people doing them together including a group of 4 but I still have not heard from some students who weren't there!!

In the Saturday group, there will be 2 presentations on the 17th and the rest on the 25th.

Then we finished Unit 10, with more medical voacabulary and the Listening.

We spent a lot of time on the use of the mdal auxialiaries, Present and Past.

In the Friday group, we began Unit 11 and did all of p.76.
In the Saturday group, we didn't have time ( we have one more class daythan the Friday group!)
so I asked you to study this vocabulary for homework.
Both groups had as homework to write about 1 of the 2 untimely deaths we talked about.

The Friday group had to study the vocab on p. 78.

UDATED Post for sharing songs- some more!

From Julia

The name of the song is Goodbye my lover
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOtSOOfjAfE&sns=em

Lyrics

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.
I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,
And I love you, I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I'm kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.

'Falling slowly' (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova, from Once, the movie)

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that

Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react

And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black

You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing it loud

And from Hicham in Saturday B2.2 class

Here you have the greatest love song written ever: "Ne me quitte pas", exact translation: "Don't leave me". The english version is "If you go away".

Written and performed by Jacques Brel.
French Lyrics : Ernst van Altena.
English Lyrics: Rod McKuen
It has been performed by many great voices like Fran SINATRA, Patricia KASS and julio IGLESIAS.

Here you have the lyrics, but trust me, the French lyrics are light years more moving than the English ones..

My favorite version is the Alsacian singer Patricia KASS' one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aawXhhxKolk

If you go away on this summer day,
Then you might as well take the sun away;
All the birds that flew in the summer sky,
When our love was new and our hearts were high;
When the day was young and the night was long,
And the moon stood still for the night bird's song.
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
But if you stay, I'll make you a day
Like no day has been, or will be again;
We'll sail the sun, we'll ride on the rain,
We'll talk to the trees and worship the wind.
Then if you go, I'll understand,
Leave me just enough love to fill up my hand,
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
If you go, as I know you will, you must tell the world to stop turning
Till you return again, if you ever do, for what good is love without loving you,
Can I tell you now, as you turn to go, I'll be dying slowly till the next hello,
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
But if you stay, I'll make you a night
Like no night has been, or will be again.
I'll sail on your smile, I'll ride on your touch,
I'll talk to your eyes that I love so much.
But if you go, go, I won't cry,
Though the good is gone from the word goodbye,
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
If you go away, as I know you must,
There'll be nothing left in the world to trust,
Just an empty room, full of empty space,
Like the empty look I see on your face.
I'd have been the shadow of your shadow
If I thought it might have kept me by your side.
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.If you go away, if you go away, if you go away

    Creep - Radiohead

    When you were here before
I couldn’t look you in the eye
    You’re just like an angel
    Your skin makes me cry
    You float like a feather
    In a beautiful world
    I wish I was special
    You’re so fucking special
    But I’m a creep
    I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
    I don’t belong here
I don’t care if it hurts
    I wanna have control
    I want a perfect body
    I want a perfect soul
    I want you to notice
    When I’m not around
    You’re so fucking special
    I wish I was special
    But I’m a creep
    I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here, oh, oh
    She’s running out again
    She’s running out
    Run, run, run, run!
    Run!
    Whatever makes you happy
    Whatever you want
    You’re so fucking special
    I wish I was special
    But I’m a creep
    I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?

    Love of my life-Queen

Love of my life - you've hurt me
You've broken my heart and now you leave me
Love of my life can't you see
Bring it back, bring it back
Don't take it away from me
    Because you don't know -
    What it means to me

Love of my life - don't leave me
You've stolen my love and now desert me
Love of my life can't you see
Bring it back, bring it back
Don't take it away from me
    Because you don't know -
    What it means to me

    You will remember -
    When this is blown over
And everything's all by the way -
    When I grow older
I will be there at your side to remind you
How I still love you - I still love you

    Ooooo
    Hurry back - hurry back
Dont take it away from me
    Because you don't know
    What it means to me

    Love of my life
    Love of my life ...

Conv. B2 and B2.2:UPDATED!! Short interesting video clips for listening practice + 1 more

I thought that my last blog- which only 1 student has looked at so far - would be enough. But I often get short video clips in English, so I'll just use this post to put any I've received. If you click onto captions, you can see subtitles in English.

This one is just a nice idea:

Very ironic and satirical ad about what the petrol companies would say if they were honest. (If another image comes up, just click it away!

One more: about a 16 year-old who found a way to diagonose pancreatic cancer and other diseases earlier.

Its 6 minutes and though he talks fast ( he's a teenager) there is a transcript!

Conv. B2 and B2.2: UPDATED! Better project organizer and interesting material about Love and love songs

I don't know when you will look at this as you are enjoying vacation. I hope this could be the last I write until after Easter Day.

1. I said I would upload the link to another project organizer document as the "uploaded" version I had was flawed.
well.....   Click here

2. In the Conv. B2 classes, we discovered that you all really love music. The very first post on my blog was about music and love songs. First there is a love song sung by Etta James, with the YouTube link. Apparently, Etta James' version is no longer available on YouTube because of copywright problems, but Beyoncé played Etta James in a film called Cadillac Records and has an equally famous version.

A.  Listen to the version by Beyoncé.  and write as much of the song as you can understand WITHOUT looking at lyrics.
Click for song:
B. Check what you've written with the lyrics with Etta James singing in the background. How much could you understand without reading? Click here

C. Now click onto the blue square at the bottom and you will find a link to a photo.  What is the relationship between this photo and the Beyoncé version of this song? Say or write 100 words about this photo. It can be about many things: how the photo makes you feel, your thoughts about the people, then +now, cultural differences, public shows of love by famous people, etc.
FINALLY BRING IN THE LYRICS TO YOUR FAVORITE LOVE SONG IN ENGLISH. Post it on this blog under comments!!!!
AND here's vocabulary for talking about Love and love stories: Click here
One more song, entirely different from "At Last". My son and I heard this song on the radio and were talking about how we love it and lvoed the video clip.  The music is wonderful and the lyrics and video clip VERY FUNNY!  And look at Julia's comment!

Con B2 3-D Printing (for science majors)

Hi -

Hope you are all enjoying your vacation.

A few of you who are engineers or studying some field of science have expressed a little frustration that most of the topics we've discussed- with the exception of Climate Change-  are not about science-related topics. I just received a short video clip on 3 D printing that seems like science fiction to me but apparently is very near to becoming a reality! Here's the link to a short video clip. There are lots of images to help you understand. And if you click onto "captions, you can see subtitles in English. There are a few errors ( for example, when the speakers are thinking and say a "filler" like "Hmm" or "er", they write a word like "I'm" or "our" instead.  But those were the only mistakes I noticed so they are quite good. Hope you see and enjoy it.  Those of you who are science oriented should see it and explain it to the rest of us at the beginning of the frist class after the vacation.  Not sure the link worked as posted so:

B2.2 last classes: excellent summary

I hope you are all enjoying your holidays. Laura Fernández from the Friday class has made an EXCELLENT summary Here it is:

Hi. I’m Laura and here you have my summary of last Saturday.
1.      At first, we spoke about the Oral Project. Kate gave us some advice about the Project.  We read the Project Organiser which is here in the blog.
2.      When all the class arrived at classroom, we moved on with lesson 10, Health and illness. We were going to start with the vocabulary related to operations in page 71 but we reminded Kate we had already done it last day.  Therefore, we studied in the same page the vague language (kind of/sort of, or so, somehow, some kind of). Then, we put it into effect in exercise A.
3.      Before the break, Kate asked us if we had read the text “East metss West. After that she wrote on the wall some questions related to western medicine, the “placebo effect”, etc., to talk about it in groups for 10-15 minutes. Then we shared our opinions loudly for the whole class.
4.      Break
5.      We did the Speaking in page 72 in pairs. Before this, we asked Kate about some unknown words, like:

Grumpy: gruñón
Moan: gemir
Demeanour: comportamiento
Mood swings: cambios de humor
Dwell on: extenderse/insistir en
Shrug off: desdeñar
Fit: sano, en buen estado físico
Bend:inclinarse
Crouch down: agacharse

6.      We checked the Vocabulary concerned to body actions in page 73.
7.      For homework: we have to print the document of modal auxiliaries (present and past forms) and study it. Also, we have to print the Project Organizer and deliver it next day.
See you in two weeks!

Nothing more to say after this very complete summary  except that, as I mentioned I am posting an exercise to complete about the present and perfect of th modal auxiliaries in affirmative or negative. The theme of the exercise is a little outdated, bu of course, the use of the modals doesn't change!   Click here:

 OH AND ......
After the break, we really only have 1 more obligatory lesson, lesson 11!

HAVE A GREAT EASTER WEEK!

B2.2 Friday and Saturday; Summary Mar. 28 and 29 Better late than never!) AND 2 DOCS. TO PRINT

From Gaby of Friday group:

REMEMBER FRIDAY GROUP: WE ARE STARTING AT 15.45 FROM NOW ON!

Hi. This is the summary from last friday, though I'm not very sure if it's correct because I forgot my book.
At the beginning of the class we learnt some new vocabulary related to Unit 10, which we started. (For example: recover, numb, drill, thrash, nappy, to fast (v.), get rid of, to be over)
We did the exercises from its first page, including the listening, We talked about kinds of surgery  too and we corrected the exercise A on page 71 that was the homework from the previos friday. We practiced the expressions "Kind of, sort of," etc from above the exercise about developing conversations on the same page, and did that exercise.
For homework we have to read the text titled "East meets West" and a writing explaning how we get rid of stress. (In the Saturday class, most people had read it, so we could discuss it after the break-- Kate)

Two documents to print (if you see them)

Conversation B2 and B2.2 UCM researcher explaining her research in English

May be too much on one theme but a friend of mine in New York who is a very big advocate of medical marijuana and other alternative issues just sent me another video clip on the subject--- FROM A RESEARCHER AT THE UCM!!  So it's a opportunity to listen to a researcher who is working right here, getting world-wide recognition and speaking excellent English!  Good for those who want more science listenings and also for B2.2 because it's about health. There is also a text to read below.
http://www.trueactivist.com/molecular-biologist-explains-how-thc-kills-cancer-cells/

And another short video by a Hopi Indian chief about the philosophy of his people and why the USA (led not by the Hopis but by the "Americans from Europe" probably will not survive. His voice is very slow, clear and relaxing.  2 interesting statistics: before the white man arrived, there were 60 million Hopi Indians in North America but now there are 800,000 or .2% of the population.
