Wonderful Summary of Thursday's class by Ester
Hi Kate! I am Ester and I have tried to publish the comment on the
blog but I have not been able so I send it to you. Thanks and sorry for the
mistakes that I have made!
This is the summary:
Hi
guys! I'm Ester and this is the
summary of last Thursday's class.
At the
first time we played the familiar game Taboo, in which one person had to define
a word without naming the "taboo words" and the rest of the class had to try to
guess the word, a very entertaining game that helped us to review the vocabulary
of "Love Stories" and "Travel and Tourism".
After
that, we heard a listening about a radio programme where people called to tell
their problems and asked for an advice to fix this (THESE) problems.
For
example, one of the callers told that while his father was away on a business
trip, he brought out his father's car and had an accident with the car so he had
lied to his father saying that someone had stolen the car, a rather curious and
funny story!
After
this listening, we did a role play in pairs in which one was the psychologist
and the other one was the patient who went to the psychologist to tell his
problems. It was a game quite useful because all of these problems were
familiar,so it made it easier to be able to speak of them.
After the break, we heard another listening about "Marijuana" and its
effects, then in pairs we answered the questions that Kate had put on her
blog.
Using the vocabulary learned about marijuana, we divided the class into
3 groups of 6 people and played "The Marijuana Party", so we have to played a
role and we have to try to defend our opinion about the effects and damage that
such drugs may cause (may cause(v) such drugs- subj) to our health. A very
funny game in which we laughed a lot!.
Finally, we discussed the ideas that we have to present the project and
we talked a little about them.
I hope that my summary has served the people who could not come on
Thursday.
See you on Monday! Have a great weekend everyone!

10th class:Reina Sofía Museum Visit
Please remember to meet at the new door or gate at 3.45pm because we should start the tour at 4 pm.
Betsy and her class saw 2 other 15-min. video clips about Dalí. Frankly, I thought that the interview and the quiz plus tomorrow was enough but she said they are very good and pedagogical and her class liked them, so if you can see them tomorrow before the tour, it's probably a good idea.

I just saw them. They have a lot of answers to the quiz, so we should have seen them 1st, but they'll help the answers stick in your minds. These videoclips are really made for children,( in fact, the presenters are kids), which may make them easier for you to understand or you may find them a little childish and boring. In any case, there is a brief vrsion if you are pressed for time:

BTW, I just saw a very interesting film playing now in VO in English at the Verdi, UGc Manoteras and I'm sure other places. It's callled Before Midnight (in Spanish Antes del Anochecer). It's the 3rd of a sequel with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, but the 2nd ovie was 10 years ago. It's pertinent to the videoclip and debate about men and women, which we will do on Monday or Tuesday.

Conv. 3 July 13 9th class
In the first 2 hours, we will be doing "everything you ever wanted to know about job interviews but were afraid to ask"
1. Motivating factors in choosing a job
2. Talking about your personal skills click here:
3. Tricky questions for job interviews
In the second half, we will be preparing for the museum visit with the interview with Dali, a quiz about him and some sheets to take to the museum on Friday. You have the interviewtranscript and I think Betsy has made enough copies of the rest.
COULD SOMEBODY MAKE A SUMMARY OF THE LAST CLASS, PLEASE?

Conv. 3 8th Class
As I explained, we will start off the class playing TABOO with the LOVE and TOURISM vocabulary. I have some cards but it would be nice if you made some more. The idea is to write the word you want defined, and then write a minimum of 5 words would normally be used in the definition but are "taboo", making the definition more difficult. The example I gave in class was>
HONEYMOON
(taboo words) bride groom wedding married couple trip
Then we are going to do another activity and finally I have decided to do 2 listenings and debates, one on alternative vs. conventional medicine ( since it came up in class) and the other on marijuana, with a listening
and a roleplay.
We will also discuss the oral projects and start to plan them.
Here are the links to the marijuana listening and roleplay: the other things doen't need links.

This is the summary of last Monday class. I hope it´s useful for students couldn´t attend.
First of all, we corrected the exercises of vocabulary called “The cinema” attached to Friday class. We can add other pun to our vocabulary because “plot” is not only the events which form the story of a novel, film, etc., but a small piece of land where nothing is built. Otherwise, “Chickflick”, sounds as an amusing word and there is a different between spectators (for sports) and audience (for films). Afterwards, in groups of two, we tried to answer the questions below trying to learn the new vocabulary.
The next topic was “Travels and tourism”:
- We worked a listening with questions called “Travelling tales”.
- We made a rolE-play in pairs: we had to make questions and answers for a survey about what kind of tourism we enjoy and we prefer. Besides, we shared the answers with the whole group.
- We discussed about “Questions for debate”, a written sheet you can find in this blog: advantages and disadvantages of tourism in Spain (environmental effects, employments, corruption and other collateral aspects), the kind of tourism we have got in Spain and we´d like, the polemic “Euro-Vegas project” in Madrid and the globalization of world tourism: “Despite obvious differences, European countries are similar”. Kate asked us a good question: Do you have any friends of others nationalities?
- The last exercise we did was the listening and translation of the famous song “Englishman in N.Y” by Sting. “Alien” is not only a latin or marxist word but an English one!
Homework: At the end of the class, Kate recommended us to work out the vocabulary of “Travel and tourism” for next class (You can find the sheet in this blog). BTW, we hope to use the video player if technical problems don´t prevent us.
See you this afternoon and excuse me my writing mistakes.
Almudena.
